In Defense of US News Law School Rankings
Kenneth Terrell (Princeton Alumni Weekend), Why College Rankings Are Still Important, If They’re Flawed:
Yale’s recent announcement that it would no longer “participate” in the US News Law School Rankings, despite its place at the top of that list, has renewed the buzz that the era of these annual lists might be coming to an end, especially as 10 other law schools quickly announced that they were no longer they would not cooperate with the publication. These institutions argue that the criteria US News USA impairs its ability to enroll students of color, students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and those who might want to pursue careers in public service. …
I believe that ratings are an important, if imperfect, tool for students and families. …
To improve the education and career outcomes of law school students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, the first in their families to attend college, students of color, or all of the above, the commitments with a significant change they would be more effective. than the announcements about withdrawing from the rankings.
For example, several studies suggest that removing the LSAT and GRE from the application process would allow law schools to increase diversity in their enrollment. Building and strengthening recruitment pipelines with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-serving institutions, and other minority-serving institutions would allow law schools to identify talented students and give them a head start in developing the skills needed to succeed in law school. . Offering low-income students free tuition or no student loans up front instead of offering them loan forgiveness options after they’ve racked up debt could encourage more of them to pursue careers in public service.
From an administrative perspective, changes like these could take years to implement. What I can say most immediately is that, based on my experience as editor of the US News education rankings is that the most likely effect of these retirement announcements is a significant increase in viewership of next year’s law school rankings. The debate about the end of rankings ultimately only serves to keep people talking about them.
