Pelosi’s office issued a official statement regarding the incident. Spokesman Drew Hammill said:
“Early this morning, an assailant broke into Pelosi’s residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi. The assailant is in custody and the motive for the attack is being investigated. Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery. The Speaker was not in San Francisco at the time.
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time.”
It’s worth noting that it’s currently just after 6:00 a.m. local time in California, so Mr. Pelosi’s attack occurred before dawn.
CNN shared that Speaker Pelosi was not in San Francisco at the time of the attack. She is presumably at her Washington DC residence, as Congress is in the middle of a lame duck session.
