There are rumors that the Tories are switching to electoral mode, with an early autumn election on the cards.
The thought is not that they will win, but that then they will lose less. To fuel that, they think there is very little they can accomplish by staying in office. And they believe Labor will make a mess of government, so going to the countryside now brings forward the time when they can return to office, after just one term on the opposition benches.
I can see the argument. They’ve got around Northern Ireland as much as they can. There is no more they can do about Brexit.
The small boat bill is toxic and it won’t work, and they know it. But it has political merit for them at the moment, which will quickly fade as the ships continue.
It seems that the strikes will be resolved with terrible deals agreed by the unions.
Inflation will fall. They don’t want to wait for people to realize that prices won’t fall and there won’t be growth as a result.
And in parliament they have no idea what to do.
So the rumors could have some basis.
Similarly, MPs desperate not to be unemployed may well beg for the latest possible date.
